A Tragic End

I am shocked. Beyond words. I just got news that a friend of mine Lovena Loo (Peng) has just been found gagged, bound and murdered in her apartment in KL. It's in the Star newspaper.

Apparently she was dropped off after cell group on Friday night and that was the last time anyone saw her. She was found on Monday when her parents broke into her apartment to look for her. I've known Peng for years though I was never really that close to her. She was a bubbly cheerful person who loved life and was always willing to serve God. She was one of the make up artists in DUMC's Punctuations Productions, and that's when I first got to know her. The last time I saw her was at our Rendezvous event, where we organized a Treasure Hunt in the Curve area. That was in February. I haven't seen her since.

It seems like such a waste of life to know that something tragic like this has happened, whatever the reasons. It's so wrong for life to end so suddenly that way. This is the second person that I've known who has passed away tragically and unexpectedly. The first was Laurence, who died in a diving accident a year back. It really makes me feel angry and upset at the same time. It must be a really hard time for her parents and loved ones right now. All we have to hope and pray for is that her family will be comforted now and that the person who committed this crime will be brought to justice.

I wanted to blog abt something in the same lines as u LX... Thanks for posting ur comment up.. Can I quote you?
Indeed we don't live in fear.. but in freedom.. Let's not allow the devil, his minions or ppl intimidate us.

Though there are many incidents such as this, which unfortunately have claimed even close friends and acquaintances of ours, I would encourage us all not to retreat in fear and have our lives controlled by potential evil-doers. Many people whom I know, have been deeply affected by untoward incidents and have since chosen to live a "safer" life, and decline going out at night, etc...

My take on things is to be vigilant, yes, VERY vigilant and not to do silly things such as walk alone in dark alleys, but not to have fear control our lives. Imagine if Peng had been fearful every night of her life and not helped out at Punctuations, what a loss it would have been for the Kingdom.

For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power, and of love, and of wise discretion.
(2 Tim 1:7 - Darby Bible Translation)

I believe she led her life to the full, and God undoubtedly was in control, even in the bad times. We may never understand it as a human, but one day, we can quiz God about all things.

I couldn't make it for the wake as well. Those who went, maybe you could share with us how it went? Thanks CK Wong and Karen for sharing your thoughts on Lovena.

Patrick Leong gave me that first-hand info (as he himself was a fellow CG member of Lovena) and that left me somewhat dumb-founded the whole of yesterday and today......occasional lunch hours after Sundays' 2nd Celebration with Uncle Arthur and Auntie Edna will NEVER be the same anymore without Lovena (Peng) - but let's all take consolation that Lovena has only moved on back to her heavenly Dad EARLIER....until we meet her some fine day.....:)

Peng was my God sister. I knew her since she was schooling. We were supposed to meet up today but since she didn't respond to my call, I phone her brother and came to know of her death. Her dealth is truely tragic. I am still shocked to know that she is with the Lord.

Peng was just over my house the week before.
She was telling me that she wanted to sell her appartment and move back to her family. Then she can buy a car and save some money to buy a landed property. She mentioned that she made some money out of her investment in mutual fund.
Also, we wanted to setup her own business. Then she showed me samples of her name cards. There were 3 choices, 2 of them with a clock. She asked me what was a good tagline. And I qouted Ecclesiates 3 "A time for everything" since she wanted to do Functions planning, Wedding planning and financial planning.

One thing for sure is her hearts is for the Lord and her family. She mentioned to me quite a few times to talk to her brothers about Christ. Even her Cell Group leader mentioned that she wanted Jesus to appear to her family during dinner so as to help her show her family who Christ is.

Peng.... we love you.... always and forever.
We will miss you dearly.

My husband and I are truly saddened by the tragic news of Lovena's death. Lovena had served as an usher on our team for many years. She was a bubbly, friendly and confident person. We will all miss her dearly. The last I spoke with her was 2 months ago when her apartment's roof leaked and flooded her place. She was devastated. And now it's even a worst tragedy.

Thanks Ian for updating us. At least we know the true story. I can't believe the press can publish information that is not verified yet.

Bob, I do hope that you and the rest of the members managed to get to know her better in the time that you had. I guess we have to take comfort knowing that we WILL see her again, in heaven someday.

The newspaper article was wrong. It was robbery. See the post by Joshua on the Pengyaus Google Group. (There're also reflections by other people and photos.)

I am speechless when I heard on the news. Still in state of shocked now.
You are right LX. Just wish I have more time with a friend like her. She was in our team during the treasure hunt. She has been the one that take intiative calling me for good food outing. So sad I could not make it most of the time coz of work. In fact she called 2 weeks ago and we had a pact to go out for real good makan after I come back from China shoot. Well, all now too late.
Pray she would rest in peace with Lord! Lovena, we will never forget your bubly smile! You have bring joy to me.

Juliane & I knew her well. She was one of Juliane's closest friends, and even before I dated Juliane, I was her dance partner learning ballroom dancing.

I was one of the first to find out, because auntie Edna called us to find out if she was with us. Juliane had spoken to her on Thursday so knew her plans for Saturday, and that's how the family could figure out that she did not make it to any of her Saturday plans.

So they broke down the door of her apartment soon after and found her body. (The newspaper article is wrong about the roommates -- she had no roommates.)

I echo your feelings. It's just so sad to hear of two friends who died about a year apart at the prime of their lives.

I always find it very disturbing to know I've interacted with a certain person before, and now know I can no longer do so due to unforeseen circumstances. It really makes me think deeply about whether I would have treated a person differently had I known that they would be gone the next day.

Though I didn't know Lovena very well, I know she was fun loving and that she had fun while attending the Rendezvous Treasure Hunt that was organized by our Rendezvous Crew. From what I've heard, she made fairly good friends with her team-mates, and I'm proud to say that her group won the FIRST prize at the treasure hunt.

You will be missed, and we shall meet again in heaven. May God watch over your family and friends whom you've left behind, even as you've gone on ahead to the better place.
