It is often when you take the first step that you discover that God will do the rest. How many times have I been reminded that faith is not faith until it is tried and tested. Matthew 14:25-33 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
Peter must have really believed that he could walk on water as Jesus did. He took an active step of faith - one that is untested; until he actually stepped on the water. God never calls us to have a faith that is merely spoken words, but He expects us to act on what we say. Do we truly mean it when we say to God, "Yes Lord, I have faith in you, and I trust you?" What if Jesus extended his hand towards us, asking us to come, "Act in faith, my child". Will I really do it? Is the faith that I profess the same faith that will stand firm despite tough times? Even when God seems silent? Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
What reassures me, however, despite what Peter went through, and how he faltered when the testing came, that at the end of the day, God was still there to catch him. Peter was not denied a supernatural experience of God, even though he doubted. My heart sings, O God, my heart sings! In Your grace, despite our weaknesses and weak faith, you still hang on to us. In a strange way, perhaps it is not so much about the magnitude of our faith that matters, but Your character that is strong and unwavering. |
